The beginning

For 80 years HR Sanders has been at the forefront of the Mid North as your one stop shop for high quality products and local service.

Hugh Ramsay (Tod) Sanders came to Clare with his family from Price when he was 10 and attended school in Clare.

On December 1, 1931, aged 19, and with 120 pounds in his pocket, he purchased a struggling fodder business and began Stanley Grain and Chaff Store.

This began his career as a grain and fodder merchant.

Tod’s father Frank, an agent for grain merchants Vercos and later Elder Smiths, was also a registered member and silent partner of the firm.

The reason for this was that laws and financial constraints at the time meant persons under 21 were unable to make business and company agreements.

Frank continued as a silent partner until the business later became the registered firm of HR Sanders in 1945.

Tod purchased the land in 1935.
