What Lies Beneath
The percentage is pretty high. Sociologists have never actually taken an official survey, but the Nadler Anecdotal Evidence Chart puts the number at 97.3%. That’s the percentage of Islanders who dress radically badly in the winter.
Three factors combine to produce this appalling statistic:
1. We’ve inherited the Yankee habit of keeping our thermostats turned excruciatingly low. Some hide-bound New Englanders decree that the furnace will remain OFF through Thanksgiving, no exceptions made for first frosts or even second or thirteenth. Frigid rooms mean people pile on layers of clothing with no passing thought to fashion.
2. We’re pragmatic, and we realize that on our daily errands, no Home Security scanners can peer under our hats, scarves and duffle coats.
3. A large proportion of us are artists, writers, or plumbers with PhD’s in philosophy, so we’re eccentric to begin with, and probably gravitated to our chosen fields because, in the pursuit of them, we’ve never needed to look our best.
