Dr Martens - what images does the iconic brand conjure? Punk rockers? Anarchists? Rebels? Hippies? I once knew a media darling forever clad in Manolo Blahniks who proudly admitted to wearing a pair of Dr Martens under her wedding dress. This was back in her anti-Capitalist, student marching days, she’d explain. Doc Martens were part of the armour of protest. They made a political statement without you even needing to open your mouth.

A pioneering, fashion designer friend started sporting his classic Dr Martens last year. While we all joked he looked like a punk, he retorted “Just you wait,” And now it seems as predicted, he’s having the last laugh.

The brand once unfairly associated with nationalists and subversive subcultures has shaken off its riotous image in recent years and has now been embraced by the fashion pack as the shoe to be seen in this autumn. Jessica Alba, Agyness Deyn, Nicki Minaj are just some of the celebrities pounding the streets in the classic boots in the States. Here in Cyprus, the trend is also exploding.
