Bears are natural champions in the water
It has been just five years since the Landon School started a water polo program, but the Bears are already making strides.
On Nov. 6, the team won its first major tournament title in school history by capturing Division B at the 27th annual Eastern Interscholastic Water Polo Championship at St. Benedict’s Prep in Newark, N.J. Coach Walt Bartman’s squad defeated Baltimore’s Mount St. Joseph, 10-8, in the final match.
“It was crazy,” Bartman said. “We didn’t expect it, but played really well. Hopefully, this is one of many more victories to come as we continue to try to grow the sport.”
Landon stands alone as the only full-fledged varsity water polo program in Montgomery County, after spending its initial three years as a club. Public school Walt Whitman started a club team this fall.
“Five years ago when we started as a club, I had 16 guys,” Carter said. “Now we have 75 kids participating on a varsity, junior varsity and middle school team. … There is no secret water polo isn’t that popular, particularly around here on the East Coast.
