In a highly integrated world as it is today, it is just not fitting for any economy in Asia to think they can be insulated, even though some of them do boast of strong domestic economy and healthy financial system.
As International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief Christine Lagarde puts it, “Asia needs to be prepared”. Whether it is through the trade channel, or the financial sector, which can operate as a crisis accelerator, Asia is not immune to the problems currently sweeping across the eurozone, she warns.
She couldn't be more right.
Clock is ticking
Economists have already warned that there could be an external demand shock, affecting Asian economies at varying degrees, if the eurozone debt crisis degenerates into a sizeable economic downturn.
